Nepal's Political Landscape Witnesses Major Alliance Formed Between TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor
In a significant move ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.
"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.
The September uprising was triggered by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Terms of the New Electoral Partnership
According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.
Wider Political Discussions Taking Place
In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the uprising.
After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
